The Good, The Bad and The Elite of AEW Dynamite 4/27/22
By Alex Kalil
The Good
-Blackpool Combat Club continues to dominate: The trio of Danielson, Moxley and Yuta continue to deliver quick and dominant wins while getting all three men more and more over. Hopefully a feud for these three is in the works soon but until then these are still fun matches to watch.
-Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus vs. Team Taz coming soon: A nice simple promo backstage to set up this match down the road. I even liked the subtle Christian heel turn tease. Him vs. Jungle Boy on PPV will be fantastic. And I love Starks and Hobbs getting more TV time.
-Wardlow vs. Lance Archer: The Wardlow push continues to be one of the best things on wrestling TV right now. Archer got just enough in to look like a threat, Wardlow showed off more of his abilities and got a solid win on TV. All the while, MJF and Spears watched and sold the whole thing perfectly.
-JAS and Kingston's crew promo: Jericho has made a 180 to me. Him as a "Sports Entertainer" with his henchmen is the right kind of heat for these fans. Parker calling the AEW fans the "AEW Galaxy" is incredible. Santana and Ortiz prove that they are one of the most underrated teams in wrestling and then Kingston got the mic. My God, Kingston is the most real person in wrestling and every word he says is believable. Him and Jericho go back and forth and Kingston tells Jericho that he will put him in the ground and Jericho sold it like he had seen a ghost. It was fantastic and best of all: No fighting! Thank you! Save the violence for later. More on that in a few.
-Deeb wins the feud and sets up a title match: Serena Deeb won the Philly Street Fight against Hikaru Shida to win their series of matches. While not their best match, this was still a good match and made Deeb look like a badass as she punished Shida to put her away and get the tap out. Backstage, Thunder Rosa was watching the match so clearly a title match for Deeb is coming and I am very okay with this. Also nice to see a heel win the feud.
-Jericho throws a fireball at Kingston: Later in the show, we see backstage Kingston, Santana and Ortiz getting jumped by the JAS and Jericho puts the icing on the cake by throwing a fireball in Kingston's face. It looked great and I love a good fireball in wrestling so this was a win!
-Ladder Match is solid: There was a lot of good to come out of the main event. Sammy and Tay are now full on heels and clearly are getting a reaction and making it work for them. Scorpio Sky is getting more over with the fans after his lackluster babyface run early on. The match was also good with Sammy taking a LOT of crazy (and scary bumps). Sky gets the win in the end to a huge pop.
The Bad:
-Scorpio Sky's babyface promo: Sky is a very good worker and athlete. He is not a great promo or very charismatic. Less is more when it comes to Sky talking.
-Women's promo: Tony Schiavone was backstage with Toni Storm, Ruby Soho, Britt Baker and Jamie Hayter to build up the Owen Hart Tournament and it was... eh. Ruby got a good line about Baker and Hayter throwing their dicks around (which the heels sold great) and Baker got Ruby with a catering line but this didn't do much to make me excited for this tournament.
-MJF teases Big Cass?: MJF did another great interview backstage where he set up Wardlow's opponent for next week by teasing the AEW debut of W. Morrissey from Impact or Big Cass from WWE. While I have heard, the man has improved since leaving WWE, this isn't a name I am super excited to see on Dynamite.
-Fenix returns: House of Black comes out with beaten down Fuego Del Sol and tries to unmask him. But Alex Abrahantes in the ring distracts them. Penta and PAC come out to the ramp followed by Alex? Fenix is the one in the ring! House of Black and Death Triangle get into a brawl before the heels bail. On the one hand, I loved Fenix being back and Death Triangle using the fact that Alex Abrahantes was dressed up in a goofy outfit to get the jump on House of Black, this felt like a very WWE segment and not a good one. Hopefully these 6 men can work magic in the ring because the build-up stuff isn't that magical.
-Undisputed Elite wins a lackluster match: The team of Adam Cole, reDRagon and the Young Bucks won what was more or less, a squash match against a bunch of lower card guys. This didn't do much to be good, it was just there. Having the Undisputed Elite united is a nice storyline element but this didn't need to be on this show.
-TNT Championship continues to be hot-shotted: For the 4th time this year, the TNT title changed hands with Sky winning the belt back after just 10 days. Hopefully this puts a stop to the quick title changes and we can get a decent title run with it again. Fingers crossed.
The Elite
-The opening 30 minutes: In the opening 30 minutes of Dynamite, we got CM Punk on commentary, Dax and Cash of FTR in their first singles match ever (which was great), the announcement that it will be "Hangman" Adam Page vs. CM Punk for the AEW World Championship at Double or Nothing and then a CM Punk promo to sell the match! This was the best 30 minutes of TV you will see all week. The only thing missing was Hangman Page who was out with COVID. But still, what a winner this segment was. Go out of your way to see all of this!
