305 matches! All ranked and reviewed in 2023! This year was one of my favorite years ever in pro wrestling from just an in-ring standpoint. I had so much fun ranking and reviewing all these matches and I hope that next year I do even more. The road to 400 starts now! Enjoy!
1. 60 Minute Iron Man Match for the AEW World Championship: MJF (c) vs. Bryan Danielson at AEW Revolution 2023: This Was Pro Wrestling! Right from the bell Danielson is clearly the calmer and better wrestler. MJF looks to stall and duck Danielson's early onslaught before finally going after Danielson's hurt shoulder. MJF works over the injury nicely to soften Danielson up for the Salt of the Earth as well as take away Danielson's advantage on the mat. Danielson is able to fire up and starts mounting a comeback which causes MJF to take more risks for bigger offense and he slightly tweaks his knee. Both men have an injury now and they start trading quick pinfall attempts to get on the board before Danielson is able to nail a Busaiku Knee and gets the first fall. Danielson looks for a second knee but MJF kicks him low for a DQ. MJF quickly capitalizes and scores two quick pinfalls to tie it back up. MJF is now back in control but Danielson starts to go after MJF's hurt knee with kicks and submissions. MJF starts to feel the desperation and nails a top rope elbow to the outside through a table on Danielson to try and get a count-out. But Danielson still makes it back in the ring! MJF is furious and willingly hurts his own knee more to hit Danielson with a brutal Tombstone Piledriver onto the broken table! Heatseeker on a now bloody Danielson gives MJF another fall and the lead. Now MJF is in his comfort zone and just mocks and belittles Danielson as he slaps him and stomps on him. Danielson fires back and starts going for broke. He throws himself at MJF with headbutts, dives and a scary Spider Superplex. A Diving Headbutt off the top by Danielson and MJF is pouring blood! Danielson locks in the Regal Stretch and MJF has to tap. It's tied again! Danielson looks for the Regal Stretch again but MJF is able to lock in the Salt of the Earth. The two trade submissions back and forth before MJF gets the Salt of the Earth back in. MJF ties up both of Danielson's arms and one of his legs while in the hold but Danielson still makes it to the ropes! 5 minutes to go and the two men start slugging it out. A second Heatseeker only gets 2. MJF goes to the top but Danielson catches him and lands some Hammer and Anvil Elbows but MJF slips him into a Tombstone Piledriver off Bret's rope! MJF tries to cover but his knee is destroyed!. He finally covers but Danielson gets a Half Crab in! Seconds to go! MJF can't get to the rope! Time expires! It's a tie! But wait! We get Sudden Death! Roll-up by Danielson. Kick-out! MJF blocks the ref and kicks Danielson low. Roll-up with the tights! Kick-out! MJF wants to use the belt but the ref stops him. MJF has the diamond ring! He misses! Danielson hits the Busaiku Knee! 1,2... Kick-out! Half Crab again! MJF barely makes it to the ropes but taps to make Danielson think he tapped out. MJF rolls outside to recover. He nails Danielson with an oxygen tank! Ref didn't see it! MJF locks in the LeBell Lock. Danielson is still alive! Danielson tries to fight but he can't do it! Danielson taps and MJF wins! My God! What a match! Perfect pacing, booking, story-telling and action with an amazing finish. The Greatest Iron Man Match of All Time! *****
2. IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship Match: Kenny Omega (c) vs. Will Ospreay at AEW/NJPW Forbidden Door 2023: A brilliant and brutal match! A slow start early on as each man feels each other out. Ospreay goes high risk first to take advantage and starts to up the brutality of the match. We get a nice callback to their first match only reversed with Ospreay violently slamming Omega into the announcer's table to bust him up. Ospreay is full heel here by mocking the Canada crowd but it only serves to fire up Omega, who comes back and busts Ospreay open on the stairs before DDTing him on them! Ospreay is pouring blood as the two men battle it out! Incredible back and forth action with gorgeous counters. Omega looks to finish Ospreay off with the One-Winged Angel but Callis gives Ospreay a screwdriver. Ospreay stabs Omega! Hidden Blade and Stormbreaker follows up but Omega gets his foot on the rope! Ospreay makes it personal with a Kamagoye and a One-Winged Angel but Omega kicks out at one!!! Omega won't stay down but Ospreay isn't done! Some more back and forth counters before Ospreay drops Omega on his neck with a Tiger Driver 91 and a Stormbreaker finally ends it. What a match! Violent, bloody, great story-telling and two of the best wrestlers today. A perfect match! *****
3. IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship Match: Will Ospreay (c) vs. Kenny Omega at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17: What a match! Ospreay comes in with something to prove and looks to use his speed to go right after Omega. Ospreay is able to get some shine in before Omega runs him into the guardrail and goes to work on the neck and back of Ospreay. Match becomes Ospreay fighting from underneath to survive while Omega uses his experience and knowledge to out-work Ospreay. Omega hits a crazy DDT into the top turnbuckle and busts Ospreay open badly! Omega is just mauling Ospreay, who is struggling to stay alive. Omega pulls out all the stops: V-Triggers, Tiger Driver, Croyt's Wrath all to punish Ospreay but he won't stay down. Ospreay is able to level Omega with Hidden Blades, the Oscutter and even a Styles Clash in the hopes of pulling off a win but none of those work! Omega is able to slip out of the Stormbreaker and nails a V-Trigger. Omega grabs the arms of Ospreay, who spits in Omega's face, and nails him with a Kamagoye! One-Winged Angel finally puts down Ospreay and Omega wins it! This was a perfect match! Omega was a vicious and violent heel and beat the hell out of Ospreay, who became the biggest babyface in the world here and did everything he could to win and prove himself to Omega and the fans. This was beautiful, violent wrestling and one of the greatest matches of all time! *****
4. Strap Match: Bryan Danielson vs. Ricky Starks at AEW All Out 2023: This was beautiful pro wrestling violence! Starks jumps Danielson before the bell and gives him some hard shot to the head with his weight belt to bust Danielson open. The match officially starts and Danielson is already on defense as he tries to cover up while Starks whips the hell out of him with the strap. Danielson starts to fight back and nails Starks with his own shots before using the strap to pull Starks into the ring post and busting him open. We now got an insane double juice strap match going on as Danielson unloads brutal strap shots on Starks! My God! Awesome moment as Starks starts whipping Danielson, only for Danielson to no sell it and whip him back, asking him if he is going to take it. Fucking awesome! Big Bill tries to get involved but Ricky Steamboat at ringside stops him. Danielson is cut in half by a Spear from Starks but only a 2 count. Roshambo attempt by Starks but Danielson slips out and hits a Busaiku Knee! Only 2 again! Danielson kicks Starks' fucking head in and applies the LeBell Lock but Starks is fighting out of it! Danielson uses the strap to apply more pressure and Starks passes out! What a fucking match! Danielson fought from underneath like the fantastic babyface he is while Starks looked like a star in defeat after the grueling match both went through. The Greatest Strap Match of All Time! *****
5. Bryan Danielson vs. Zack Sabre Jr. at AEW WrestleDream 2023: A phenomenal pro wrestling match! We get some amazing back and forth mat wrestling early on as both men look even in every way in terms of skills. Sabre starts to go after the previously broken right arm of Danielson to try and make an opening and Danielson responds with some brutal and violent looking Dragon Screws to the leg of Sabre. Fantastic back and forth counters into pinning attempts and submissions from both men. As the man goes on, Danielson's arm starts to fail him and Sabre's submissions start to get locked on deeper and deeper to the point where Danielson is unable to escape and has to fight to the ropes. Danielson still has his kicks though and nails a roundhouse to rock Sabre. Stomps to the head as Sabre tries to keep fighting out only to get dropped on his head by a Regal-plex. Busaiku Knee by Danielson but only 2! Danielson pulls down the knee pad and hits a second Busaiku Knee to end things! What a match! Danielson gets the win but wasn't able to tap out or out-wrestle Sabre to do it. A damn near perfect match! ****3/4
6. IWGP World Heavyweight Championship Match: Kazuchika Okada (c) vs. Shingo Takagi at NJPW The New Beginning in Osaka 2023:An incredible back and forth match! Both men start out slow and look to out-wrestle each other. Okada gets the early edge and starts going after Shingo's neck with a nice heel vibe to his offense. Shingo is able to start using his strikes to turn the momentium in his favor and forces Okada to fight for openings. Shingo keeps on the gas and works over Okada until Okada hits a Tombstone Piledriver on the floor! Back in the ring, Okada locks in the Money Clip to wear down the beast Shingo and set him up for the Rainmaker. Okada looks for his usual finishing combo ending with a Rainmaker only for Shingo to destroy Okada with a big lariat of his own! From there the match becomes an all out fight as both men start throwing their best shots and biggest bombs at each other. Okada hits a Rainmaker out of desperation to just give him a chance to find an opening to take over. Okada goes for a second one but is countered right into a Last of the Dragon for a huge near-fall! Okada is able to rock Shingo with an enzuigiri, and despite Shingo's one last flurry of offense, Okada hits a Cobra Flowson and one last vicious Rainmaker to get the win. I loved seeing Okada play heel to Shingo's babyface fire. While Shingo was a beast all match, Okada is still the Ace. ****3/4
7. Texas Death Match: Adam Page vs. Swerve Strickland at AEW Full Gear 2023: A bloody and violent war between these two! Page wastes no time and rushes out during Swere's entrance to jump start this fight and nails a Buckshot Lariat in the opening minutes of the match. Page tapes Swerve's hands together and attacks him with a staple gun! Swerve is pouring blood already! A low blow buys Swerve time to free his hands and attacks Page. A piledriver on the barricade busts open Page and the ring is covered in both men's blood! Barbed wire, barbed wire wrapped chair, broken glass! My God! These two are trying to murder each other! Page drops Swerve onto a barbed wire board and lands bomb after bomb on him! Buckshot Lariat! Nana helps Swerve get to his feet! Brian Cage rushes in and tries to take out Page but Page fires back to get rid of him. Page with a Deadeye to Nana through a table! Page is going after everyone! Swerve with a cinder block to the back of Page's head! Page still beats the count! Swerve uses a chain to choke out Page! Swerve is hanging the Hangman! Page tries to stand but he can't do it and Swerve gets the win. What a goddamn war between these two! Sold the intensity and violent nature of their feud with Page fighting everyone to get his hands on Swerve, only to be beaten by his own method. Glorious Pro Wrestling Violence! ****3/4
8. Undisputed WWE Universal Championship Match: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Cody Rhodes at WWE Wrestlemania 39 Night 2: A near perfect wrestling match. The crowd is electric before these two even touch. Cody is able to match Roman's wrestling early on before the power of Roman shuts down Cody's momentum. Roman goes to work on the mid-section of Cody with punches and slams on the outside. Cody starts to fight back but a chair shot to the ribs by Solo puts Roman back in the driver seat. Roman goes for a powerbomb through the announce table but Cody back drops him through it! Cody is back in control but again, Solo comes in with a belt shot to Cody's back. The referee hears the shot and throws Solo out. Both men start throwing big shots at each other with Cody hitting Cross Rhodes and using a Pedigree and Figure Four for close near-falls. Cody comes off the top right into a Spear but only 2! Now Roman is starting to worry. He starts unloading shots on Cody and locks in the Guillotine Choke. Cody is fading but he fights out! Cody starts unloading on Roman! Referee is taken out by a missed boot. The Usos run out and hit 1D on Cody. Sami and Owens out and they take out the Usos. Stunner and Helluva Kick to Roman. Cody covers. Kickout! Both men start slugging it out. Superman Punch misses. Bionic Elbow by Cody! Cross Rhodes! And another one. Cody goes for one more but Heyman distracts the referee. Solo spikes Cody! Roman with a Spear and it's over. Cody fails to finish the story. This was everything wrestling should be! Action, excitement, crowd energy through the roof, two mega stars battling it out and all the drama that comes with that. If Cody had won here and conquered the final boss, it would have been a 5 Star Classic. ****3/4
9. AEW World Championship Eliminator Match: MJF vs. Adam Cole at AEW Dynamite 6/14: A phenomenal 30 minute classic! Cole is able to rattle MJF early on before MJF starts to go after the arm of Cole. Some nice heel work by MJF as Cole sells the arm well. MJF starts to get cocky and walks right into a big superkick. Match becomes more back and forth as the two men start trading offense but Cole seems to have the edge. MJF responds by hitting a Tombstone Piledriver on the apron, looking to target Cole's past concussions. Cole now has to fight from underneath as MJF starts to look for submissions on the bad arm of Cole, who is able to get to the ropes. Heatseeker by MJF gets a big near-fall but Cole isn't giving up. Since wrestling and going after the head isn't working, MJF gets desperate and elbow drops Cole through a table on the outside! But Cole is still able to beat the countout and is still fighting back! MJF pushes Cole into the referee and knocks the ref out. MJF gets the belt and tries to frame Cole for hitting him but the ref is still out. Cole hits MJF with the belt! Cole hits The Boom but only 2! MJF kicks Cole low behind the ref's back. MJF tries to use the Dynamite Diamond Ring but the ref stops him! Superkick by Cole! Panama Sunrise! And Cole hits The Boom! 1...2...Time runs out! MJF tried every trick in the book to win but Cole wouldn't let up. Cole had MJF beat if he only had one more second. What an excellent match with a brilliant finish! ****3/4
10. IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship Match: Will Ospreay (c) vs. Shota Umino at NJPW Power Struggle 2023: An incredible back and forth match! Shota starts off looking better and more confident against Ospreay, even though Ospreay is still able to control the majority of the early portions. A nice little moment with Shota refusing to use a table on Ospreay and wanting to wrestle clean. Ospreay makes him pay for this by going after him with vicious strikes and offense before a superkick busts Shota's nose open. Something in Shota snaps! Shota lights up Ospreay with strikes and gets vicious and violent with his offense! This is the Shota Ospreay wanted to face. We get an incredible back and forth battle between these two with a ton of big near-falls. Ospreay's strikes are finally able to rock Shota and Ospreay pins him to the mat and just starts laying in more elbows looking for a stoppage. Jon Moxley comes out and fires up Shota to fight back! Shota goes all out on Ospreay looking for the win. Shota hits a variety of DDTs trying to put Ospreay away, ending with a top rope Death Rider! Ospreay barely gets his foot on the rope to stay in this! A final Death Rider by Shota but Ospreay with a Hidden Blade to the face of Shota! A Jumping Blade, Death Rider and even a Storm Driver 93 still doesn't put Shota down. A Hidden Blade and Stormbreaker finally do and Ospreay retains. What a star making match for Shota who showed more fire and passion in this match than ever before. Love the story of Ospreay wanting Shota to step up and Shota unleashing his full fury on the champion, only to still fall short against the might of Ospreay. Shota looked like a future Ace here but Ospreay is still the better man for now. ****3/4
