Top Matches I Watched in October 2022
By Alex Kalil
Another month gone by. Impact and AAA had their biggest shows of the year and FTR added another 5 star match to their incredible 2022. Enjoy!
MJF vs. Wheeler Yuta at AEW Dynamite 10/5/22: Dynamite 3rd Anniversary: A classic wrestling match. MJF plays mind games with Yuta at the bell but is surprised when Yuta is able to out-wrestle him. A nice back and forth match with MJF taking shortcuts to gain the advantage from time to time. Yuta starts to play a little dirty right back when he gets frustrated with MJF's antics only for MJF to switch it up and go after the arm of Yuta. Excellent back and forth wrestling from both men as they trade roll-ups and big moves on each other. Yuta is finally able to land a big diving splash and goes for the Seat Belt pin but MJF is able to roll out of it and into the Salt of the Earth. Yuta fights for the ropes, only for MJF to switch up the submission and force Yuta to tap. Excellent match with Yuta looking like the better wrestler all match before MJF stops playing games and takes him as a serious threat. ****
WWE Intercontinental Championship Match: GUNTHER (c) vs. Sheamus at WWE Friday Night Smackdown 10/7/22: A hard hitting and physical match. GUNTHER looks to smother Sheamus with his stiff strikes and style but Sheamus is able to take every shot and dish it back at him. Lots of good back and forth with both delivering big shots for near-falls. Sheamus locks in the Cloverleaf for a great false finish before Imperium and the Brawling Brutes go at it ringside. The distraction allows GUNTHER to level Sheamus with a Lariat with a shillelagh to get the dirty win. ****
Impact World Tag Team Championship Match: The Kingdom (c) vs. The Motor City Machine Guns at Impact Wrestling Bound for Glory 2022: A very fun back and forth tag match. The Guns are the quicker veteran team but The Kingdom are able to bend the rules and use their size to control a lot of the match. Nice hot tag and comeback by the Guns who are able to keep overcoming all the rule breaking and cheating by the heels. Taven is able to take advantage of a distraction and rolls up Sabin with his feet on the ropes to steal the win. ****
Impact Knockouts Championship Match: Jordynne Grace (c) vs. Masha Slamovich at Impact Wrestling Bound for Glory 2022: Both women come out swinging with Grace using her power to control early before Masha drops her on her neck! Match is all action as both women look to land a big bomb to put away their opponent. Masha targets the neck all match while Grace throws everything she has to match the monster. Masha lands an Air Raid Crash in the corner and Snow Plow but Grace gets her foot under the ropes! Masha goes high risk only for Grace to counter and land an insane Grace Driver from the top to get the win! Super fun match! ****
Impact World Championship Match: Josh Alexander (c) vs. Eddie Edwards at Impact Wrestling Bound for Glory 2022: A good back and forth match between these two. Alexander has the power advantage and uses it while Edwards uses his experience to find openings to work over the champion. Match becomes a battle of who can throw the biggest and best bomb as they go back and forth. Alexander looks to have the match won before Honor No More causes a distraction and low blow. Edwards takes advantage and hits a Boston Knee Party for a huge near-fall. The two go back to throwing hard strikes at each other and Alexander is able to counter a second knee strike to hit a C4 Spike to get the win. ****
AAA Mega Championship Match: El Hijo del Vikingo (c) vs. Rey Fenix at AAA Triplemania XXX: Mexico City: A wild spot-fest match. Nice little story-telling of Vikingo getting frustrated by Fenix early on so he gets vicious and goes after the mask and busts Fenix open. A ton of crazy displays of speed and agility all match with each man trying to outdo the other in terms of high risk. Vikingo is finally able to land one big move that is good enough to keep Fenix down. ****1/4
Mask vs. Mask Ruleta De La Muerte Final Match: Villano IV vs. Pentagon Jr. at AAA Triplemania XXX: Mexico City: A bloody and violent match! Villano jumps Pentagon on the ramp and takes the fight to him right away. Villano rips at the mask and shirt of Pentagon, bloodies him up and uses every weapon he find to try and finish Pentagon off and save his mask. Pentagon makes his comeback and gives Villano a receipt for everything he did. Both men pull out every trick and cheap shot they have to try and survive but in the end, Pentagon was able to put down the veteran and take his mask. ****
Five Way Ladder Match for the NXT North American Championship: Oro Mensah vs. Carmelo Hayes vs. Wes Lee vs. Von Wagner vs. Nathan Frazer at NXT Halloween Havoc 2022: A wild and crazy spot-fest match. Nice story of Von Wagner being a monster all match and throwing everyone around. The other opponents need to team up to take him out of the match multiple times, all the while throwing everything they have to try to take each other out. A good showcase of young talent before Wes Lee is able to take out Hayes last and get the win. ****
Triple Threat Match for the NXT Championship: Bron Breakker (c) vs. JD McDonagh vs. Ilja Dragunov at NXT Halloween Havoc 2022: A good triple threat match with each man playing a different role: Bron is the monster all match, JD is the opportunistic heel trying to steal the win and Ilja is the underdog. A great showing all match from the three as they kept all three men involved in the match and everyone got big near-falls. Ilja is able to at long last take out JD and goes for Torpedo Moscow on Bron to end it but is destroyed by a Spear to give Bron the win. ****1/4
IWGP Tag Team Championship Match: FTR (c) vs. Aussie Open at NJPW Royal Quest II Night 1: An amazing tag match! A nice slow pace to start off as the teams feel each other out. Aussie Open picks up the pace and starts to take cheap shots to play the heels of the match. Aussie Open isolates Cash and does a fantastic job of preventing tags to Dax before at long last we get the hot tag! Dax runs wild as the match breaks down into a fight! Davis is able to eventually throw Dax into the light structure to bust him open and get a second set of heat. More back and forth action and near-falls as both teams look to land their best shot. Davis takes a stiff boot to the face and is busted open as well. Amazing moment as FTR gets dual Sharpshooters on Aussie Open and Davis looks to tap but Fletcher stops him and slaps his own partner to fire him up and get to the ropes! Both teams start trading shots back and forth before at last FTR is able to hit Big Rig on Davis for the win. Fantastic match that got you hooked right from the bell and held your attention the entire time. *****
